Transmitted-light illumination for light valve displays, for example liquid crystal displays

An alternating-current plasma panel is used for the purpose of transmitted-light illumination of a liquid crystal display or of another passive light valve display. The plasma panel electrodes can interlock mutually in the form of fingers in order to achieve an essentially uniform illumination of the display.
