The fastener (1) particularly for jewellery such as necklaces and bracelets, consists of two pieces, an exterior casing (2) and an internal plate (3). The casing has U-section and the two cheeks (5) are provided with a notch (7) which has access through a beak (9) and an eyelet (10) through which a link of the chain can be fastened. The interior plate is designed to slide longitudinally inside the casing and is guided by a bulged lower edge (16) which locates in a groove (17) at the bottom of the casing and by a projection (21) which locates in a groove (19) in one of the casing cheeks. The plate also has a notch (11) with access through a beak (12) and in the open position a link at the other end of the jewellery chain can be fitted through the notches. A pull on the chain causes the plate to move longitudinally and close the gap thus fastening the chain.
