The core is composed of sections each in the form of a disc with a circular central hole. The disc is assembled from sectors formed of a succession of laminations. These are in two packets of identical length forming a sandwich with laminations of regularly decreasing lenth between them. The laminations are cut by an automatic machine incorporating a plate which, after stacking of the first packet oriented in one direction, can be reoriented at an angle (alpha) corresp. to that of the sector to be laminated. The remaining laminations are oriented in a different direction and cut to progressively decreasing lengths, and the complete sector can be obtd. already,stacked. The coefft. of filling of the core is improved and total iron losses are minimised. The masses of iron, copper and insulation are also reduced. The shunt reactor is used for reactive power compensation in long transmission lines.
