The heat dissipated by the condenser of a refrigeration plant is recovered and used in conjunction with a heat pump to raise the temp. of water which is circulated through a heating system. The condenser of the refrigeration plant is enclosed in a tank through which is pumped the circulation water of a heating installation. The water circulation is controlled by a room thermostat which controls a three way valve to direct the circulating water either through the heater units or through an electrically heated reserve tank. The heat pump also extracts heat from external air and passes it to the circulating water. The arrangement is partic. for large department stores and slaughterhouses.
