Refractory brickwork wall with layers with different expansion - either side of slide joint coupled e.g. by tongues and grooves or dowels

The refractory brickwork, used e.g. in a regenerator wall of a coke oven battery or the wall of a blast air heater duct, consists of superimposed horizontal layers of fire bricks and comprises sections in different materials with different thermal expansion, such as chamotte and silica-based bricks, which are separated by a horizontal slide joint. In at least one of two such superimposed sections, at least two adjoining layers immediately adjacent to that joint are intercoupled, e.g. by tongue and groove connections or by dowels, to prevent relative movement.
