A bottle is held in a cradle at the end of a horizontal, radial arm of a rotor turning on a vertical axis. The cradle is pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis which intersects the bottle axis at right angles. As the rotor turns each cradle encounters the striker of a shaker station. This is followed by cradle control by shock-absorbant guides. The striker now takes the form of an arm which is given an intermittent rotary motion to make it strike and displace the cradle has projecting stops which limit cradle pivotal movement between resilient buffers. This causes the cradle to bounce back and forth and shake the cradled bottle. With the bottle axis vertical, the top cradle stop is pref. floating between the top buffer and a suspended decelerator. The decelerator pref. takes the form of a resilient flap or bristles of a brush. Mechanisation takes over a physically demanding task and ensures that it is properly carried out for every bottle.
