The arrangement includes two high speed DC electric motors (M1,M2) acting in opposite senses on a differential (D) via reducing gears (G1,G2). The speed of rotation of the differential and the speed of rotation of the output shaft (N3) depend on the difference in speed of the two motors, or rather their reduced outputs. Thus is the motors run synch., the output shaft speed is zero. If the output shaft is to turn, a difference in speed is established between the two motors, by increasing the field acting on the first motor, and reducing the field acting on the second motor. This is achieved using the regulator (R). Rotation in the opposite sense is achieved by acting on opposite motors. The motors may alternatively use electronic commutation to avoid the problems associated with brushes.
