The observation platform is attached by a wire to a fixed lookout post which ejects it vertically from a well by detonating a powder charge when an intruding vehicle is detected by an acoustic sensor. The sensor has a ground range of e.g. 100m. The output of the sensor after filtering and processing instigates ejection of the platform which ascends at a predetermined rotational speed, uncoiling the wire. An infrared detector mounted on the platform scans a spiral of increasing radius within the defended area until the intruder is recognised and located. Co-ordinates of the target are calculated and used to control the aiming of a battery of three grenade-launchers. The course of the target is extrapolated from successive data, and grenades are launched accordingly.
