The invention relates to a speed control mechanism especially for internal combustion engines, which are provided with carburettors, comprising a control element connected to the engine in question - a manually operatable mechanism arranged at a predetermined distance from the control element and a connecting arrangement allowing an adjustment of the manual operating mechanism to be proportionally transmitted to the operating element. According to the invention the control element is connected to a contact breaker switch (8), which is electrically arranged inside the electric circuit for operation of the engine. This contact breaker switch (8) also has a spring loaded, displaceable contact element (11), which by means of a tension element (5) held under tensile stress is held in a position in which the electric circuit is closed. As soon as a certain play occurs on the relevant tension element (5), however, the electric circuit is opened under the influence of the said spring.
