To clean and condition water storage and/or water distribution systems, which are exposed to pollution and in particular an accumulation of ochre an aqueous washing is used which subjects at least one part of the system surfaces to the action of a nonionic surface-active agent and a dithionite-containing compound for sufficiently long until coatings, deposits, ochre and suchlike sediments have dissolved. The washing preferably also has a microbicidal action.
