PURPOSE:To measure the equivalent amount of water of deep snow coverage with high precision by using a charged particle component as a principal component of cosmic rays and utilizing the energy of gamma rays from radioactive material in soil for a separation area of the charged particle. CONSTITUTION:A figure shows an example of a scintillation spectrum and channels and energy areas are calibrated by either or both of gamma-ray energy from potassium as environmental radioactive material and gamma-ray energy from a thorium series. Then, the relation between the equivalent amount of water of snow coverage and the attenuation of cosmic-ray charged particle components shows the ratio Ns/No of the intensity of the cosmic-ray charged particle components before and after absorption by snow when the lower-limit value of separate energy is set to 3 and 10MeV. The rate of the attenuation is relatively low as compared with gamma rays of Co-60 and cosmic-ray neutron components shown in a figure, and the equivalent amount of water of deeper snow coverage is measured.
