For optional operation of the engine with only one engine unit a controllable clutch is arranged between two four-cylinder engine units, the main shafts (23) of which are relatively short and hence rigid. The short main shafts are produced by the action of the four working pistons (1-4) of one engine unit on the ends of a two-armed lever (22). The torque is derived or introduced by way of an eccentric or crank mechanism (36), which acts on one arm of the lever. For the balancing of masses, a suitable device is provided on the other lever arm. The controllable clutch has a mechanism for balancing the speed between the two engine units and a mechanism for subsequent linking in a predetermined angular position of rotation. IMAGE
