Novel isobutyl 2,6-dimethyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-4-(2'-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine- 5-carboxylate of the formula IMAGE is prepared by reacting methyl 2'-nitrobenzylideneacetoacetate either with isobutyl beta -aminocrotonate or with isobutyl acetoacetate and ammonia.
