An air outlet duct (6) is positioned between the piglets in their special stall (3) and the sow in her stall. The duct blows air (7) towards the standing sow. The piglets are frightened by the air flow and will not enter their mother's stall as long as the air flows (which is maintained for as long as she is standing). An e.g. IR source/sensor (18-20) detects when the sow lies and switches off the air. The piglets now enter her stall and are fed. To avoid the piglets becoming used to the air flow and entering the sow's stall whilst she is standing, the flow is interrupted at intervals of e.g. 9-16 s by moving a flap (13) into the path of the compressed air. The flap is moved electrically by pulses. The sensor controls the pulse generator.
