Decoding and error correction method for 24-bit code word - corrects all 3-bit and most of 4-bit error patterns

The 24 bits of the code word are written sequentially into the columns (1,2,3...4,5,6...etc.) of a matrix which builds up three rows (H1 to H3) of partial code words. Each partial codeword is part of an extended Hamming error correction code, and each column is part of a parity control code. Each row can correct one error and detect two. The min. distance of the product code is 4x2=8. A circuit, which implements the method, uses 2 PROMS, 3 buffer stores, a summing circuit, OR-gate and a programmable logic network.
