The encoder comprises a housing adapted to be manually held and manipulated and a probe mounted on the housing and having an outer tip adapted to be applied against a surface to be magnetised. An electrical circuit is provided in the housing and includes a DC supply, windings around the probe, and a capacitor. A switch on the housing is provided for discharging the capacitor through the windings to provide a magnetic field for magnetising a spot at the surface when the tip is applied to it. The housing is formed with a portion providing a pistol grip, the switch being secured to the grip and adapted to be actuated by a finger of the user.
