After forming a pattern with the Jacquard comb, and when the comb is not working, the yarn does not mesh with the small chain, but floats over it until it joins a new pattern, after which the floating yarns are cut and withdrawn. As a result, the background or base remains perfectly clean and the striped effect is avoided when working with yarn of a different colour frcm the background yarn.
