The monoethers of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol are prepared by hydrogenation of cyclic acetals of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol with straight-chain or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes having 3 to 20 carbon atoms on copper chromite or nickel catalysts at 150 to 350 bar and 150 to 280 DEG C. The compounds obtained are preferably used as plasticiser alcohols.
