For the preparation of 2,3-dimethylbutene and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene or for the simultaneous preparation of 2,3-dimethylbutene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene and glycol- or polyglycol-n-alkyl 2,3-dimethylbutyl ether, alkali metal hydroxides are reacted with mono- or dichloro-2,3-dimethylbutane at temperatures from 100 to 250 DEG C in a two-phase liquid system in the presence of a glycol or polyglycol ether. If a glycol- or polyglycolmonoalkyl ether is employed as the glycol or polyglycol ether, the glycol- or polyglycol-n-alkyl 2,3-dimethylbutyl ether is obtained in addition to the olefin.
