The ferrule (1) is mounted to an attachment member (2) at the top of an umbrella shaft (3) by mating engagement between a downwardly projecting portion (11) of the ferrule in a central opening of the member (2). A resilient ring or flange (211) engages in an annular groove (111) of the projecting portion (11) to prevent removal of the ferrule. The ferrule can instead be of hat-like construction and include a central opening to receive an upwardly projecting portion of the attachment member.
