Catalyst based on calcined clayey mineral, containing from 40 to 80 % of SiO2, from 15 to 50 of Al2O3, from 1.5 to 20 % of Fe2O3, from 0 to 7 % of TiO2 and optionally small quantities of alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal oxides (less than 3 %) after calcination at a temperature of 900 to 1100 DEG C and its preparation from clayey minerals. The product can be modified by addition of transition metals. This catalyst is a catalyst for methanisation of synthesis gas CO,H2, in particular for the high-temperature process or for a process comprising the in-situ production of hydrogen by introduction of water. Curve C shows the stability of the catalyst in the presence of the sulphur compounds present in the reaction mixture. IMAGE
