A bell furnace is claimed comprising an insulating bell (10) resting on a bed plate (2) with a roof (11) resting on a lifting device with jacks (30,34) and a lateral wall (12) suspended from the roof (11) by means of tie beams (3) fitted with stops (6). The roof (11) can be raised with respect to the lateral wall (12) to provide an upper peripheral opening (40) for the evacuation of heat. Further raising of the roof (11) also raises the lateral wall to provide a lower peripheral opening (50) between it and the bed plate through which fresh air can be introduced to the furnace enclosure.
