Amides of formula (I) are used to improve tolerance of crops towards herbicidal acetamide derivs. of formula (II). R = H, halo or (all opt. substd.) alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, bicycloalkyl, bicycloalkenyl, tricycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, aryloxy, carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl or dithiobanyl; R1 and R2 = H, HCO, ClSO2 or (all opt. susbtd.) alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, Ph, PhO, PhSO2 or heterocyclyl; or they are NH2, alkylideneimino or opt. substd. alkylcarbonylamino or di(alkylcarbonyl)amino; R1 and R2 may together complete opt. substd. alkylideneimino; pyrrolidinyl; piperidinyl; piperidonyl; perhydroazepinyl, perhydroazocinyl; dihydropyrazolyl; di- or tetra-hydropyridinyl; azabicyclononyl; morpholinyl; perhydro-1,3-oxazinyl; 1,3-oxazolidinyl; 1,4-piperazinyl; perhydro-1,4-diazepinyl; di-, tetra- or per-hydroquinolyl or -isoquinolyl; indoly or di- or per-hydroindilyl; Het = opt. substd. 5-membered heterocylyl, opt. fused to a benzo ring; R3 and R4 = H, alkyl (opt. substd.), alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkoxyalkoxy, heterocyclyl or opt. substd. aryl, or R3 and R4 together complete an opt. substd., satd. or unsatd. heterocycle which may contain further hetero atoms.
