A method for producing embossed designs on work surfaces such as on moulds, rolls or dies is described. A photomechanically imageable transfer element is exposed to the design to be embossed. The element is developed e.g. by washout and the imagewise distribution of acid resistant material 37 remaining on a backing sheet 32 is mechanically transferred to the work surface 22 by burnishing the back of the backing sheet.
