An amorphous aluminosilicate powder comprises aggregates of porous, spherical, 3-90 nm particles consisting of (a) a core of SiO2, an aluminosilicate or a refractory metal oxide, carrying (b) a coating =0.5 (0.5-1.5)nm thick, of an amorphous hydrated aluminosilicate with molar ratio of Si:Al of 1-19:1, and opt. (c) an outer layer contg. 0-15 wt.% of a metal or metal oxide. The powder has specific surface 30-750 m2/g, apparent density =0.5 (0.5-0.9). g/cc, and a uniform pore dia. between the spherical particles of 20-150 angstroms; 90% of the pore vol. is formed by pores of dia. 0.6-1.4 D (0.7-1.3D) where D is the median dia., of the pores). The powder is used as a catalyst in petroleum refining. The catalysts have improved selectivity in catalytic cracking. In partic. mixts. of the powders with crystalline aluminosilicate zeolites modify the catalytic properties of the zeolites. The powders are stable to high-temp. regeneration. They resist breaking and abrasion. Pref. ions, e.g. rare earths, can be distributed uniformly through the catalyst matrix.
