The object is scanned by opto-sensors of at least two different types constituted firstly by the sensors (2, 3, 9) giving an approximate resolution for the measurement of all parts or portions of large object, and also sensors (4-8) giving fine resolution for detailed measurement of the object. Using the sensors of the first type are determined the presence and position of any variation in quality relevant in this context. The nature of any such variations is then determined by the sensors of the other type.
