In this method, data words representing adjacent image areas are stored distributed in a predetermined surface area of the magnetic tape in order to improve the error suppression. For this purpose, the data words representing the brightness signals of each image line and the data words representing the chrominance signals of each image line are in each case subdivided into an equal number i of equally large sections, the data from several sections with the same ordinal number and equidistant lines are combined to form groups and equidistant pixels are selected within each group and the selected pixels are combined to form blocks. The blocks are then uniformly distributed to several recording channels, the blocks comprising an area of approximately the length of one section and a number of lines in the manner of scales.
