The dowel (1) comprises an expanding sleeve (2) and an expanding element (3) having a conical contour which tapers in the setting direction. The expanding sleeve (2) has an expanding region (5) which is provided with longitudinal slots (6) and which is adjoined in the setting direction by a slot-free portion (7) having engaging means in the form of internal thread (10) and stop (11). The engaging means are used for initiating the rotational movement by a tool. The outer circumference of the expanding region (5) is provided with cutters (8) for producing an undercut in a receiving bore. For this purpose, the expanding region (5), during rotation of the expanding sleeve (3), is increasingly widened counter to the setting direction of the dowel (1) by the running-in of the expanding element (3).
