The invention describes a process for producing activated carbon from upgraded brown coal which has been produced by subjecting the brown coal to shear forces and compressing and drying the mass thus obtained to form a hard, relatively dense product, which comprises the following steps: (a) pyrolysis of the upgraded brown coal, preferably at a temperature from 350 to 500 DEG C; (b) activation of the pyrolysed product of step (a) by treatment with steam at elevated temperature, preferably from 700 to 800 DEG C; and (c) cooling the activated carbon product of step (b) in an inert atmosphere.
