Ni allyl complexes of formula (I) are new. R1-5 are each H, alkyl, aryl or ERn, where E is a heteroatom such as N, S, O and R is 1 or 2 (n is 1,2) alkyl, aryl gps. L is a mobile ligand or part of a mobile ligand and X is a non complexing anion. (I) is used as catalyst for the oligomerisation or polymerisation of alkenes or 1,n-dienes, pref. under inert atmos. and at 20- 80 deg.C amt. of (I) being 0.2-0.02 mole %. Compared to prior art, use of (I) allows trimerisation, tetramerisation and oligomerisation reactions to be effected in one reactor; synthesis is made easier since no Lewis acid is required; reactions can be effected at around 40 deg.C, thus reducing energy requirements and, finally oligomerisation can be effected in situ so that fuels can be produced in situ from excess propylene or ethylene. The polymers and oligomers may be used as elastomers (e.g. cis- 1,4-polybutadiene), lubricants (e.g. dodecene trimers) and fuel additives (e.g. hydrogenated dimers and trimers).
