Guanidinium (organo)-siliconates and (organo)-silicates are useful for impregnating mineral building materials to render them hydrophobic. The compounds are of formula: IMAGE wherein each R1 is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkenyl of 2 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl; each R2 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkenyl of 3 or 4 carbon atoms; a is 0 to 3.9, b is 0.1 to 4 and x is 0 to 1.25, with the proviso that x is 0 if R2 is hydrogen, and ??? a+b+x/=4.
