PROCESS FOR PRODUCING /+/-PHARANAL I.E. TRACER FEROMON OF MONOMORIUM PHARAONIS

A trail-marking cpd. produced by the ant Monomorium pharaonis, (+)-Pharanal having general formula (I) is prepd. as follows: Cpd.(II) where R1 is a methyl or ethyl; R2 a methoxy-methyl or 1-ethoxy-ethyl or 2-tetrahydro-pyranyl group is converted to an anion by a strong base and reacted with (IV) where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, mesyloxy or tosyloxy group to obtain (V) (R1 and R2 as above) and reduced to cpd. (VI) by a metal-hydride (R2 as above). (VII) is obtained from (VI) with sulphonic acid-chloride (where R2 as above) and Z is a mesyl-oxy or tosyl-oxy group, (VIII) obtained by metal hydride reduction of (VII) is acid hydrolysed by an alcohol to (+)-Pharanal is produced by pyridinium-di:chromate oxdn. of (IX).
