Sample for chromatographic and/or electrophoretic analysis is initially applied to and stored in a flat sorbent surface along which a stream of carrier medium, propelled e.g. by centrifugal force or by osmotic pressure, then flows in the direction of at least one edge of a measurement plate. The sample components are conveyed and sepd. in a sequence dependent on their retention. - Carrier medium reading the sorbent edge is collected for analysis by an on-line process until attainment of a specific value related to retention. Relative movement of sorbent layer and measurement plate then permits determn. of a characteristic property of a remaining component. The carrier medium may be a chromatographic element and/or a solvent used for electrophoretic analysis.
