The core loading of a pebble-bed reactor with fuel elements takes place according to the invention by an initial partial loading of the cavern, in which, however, fuel elements with such an increased fuel content are used that the criticality and intended power generation is achieved, whereupon fuel elements to compensate for the decreasing fuel content in the core continuously or be reloaded quasi-continuously. Depending on the size and design of the reactor, a discharge is necessary after a few or a few Deka years of operation, which can take place from above, which offers the possibility of providing the best possible spherical order supported by a corresponding dimpled floor with a square grid arrangement of the dimples. Such a dimpled floor can be used to force ball gaps in the horizontal direction, which help to avoid the formation of forces on the cavern wall. Alternatively, such pressure can be avoided by conical tavern walls. In the case of larger reactors in particular, graphite columns are provided in the core for receiving neutron absorbers.
