The mounting for a writing disc in a typewriter is arranged with the whole assembly on a pivot (67) to swing back from the print position and allow a fitting tool to be inserted. This lifts the disc off the mounting shaft and enables it to be exchanged for one with different characters. The fittings allow rapid exchange of the discs with little manual dexterity required. As the assembly is swung back, a release lever unlocks the disc mounting and immobilises the print levers. The disc can be replaced without having to remove the ink ribbon.
