PURPOSE:To allow an operator to confirm the position of a defect clearly and reasonably by irradiating sectioned width areas of a beltlike body with identification light which facilitates mutual visual identification. CONSTITUTION:A light projection device 1 is arranged passing over the bus line of beltlike bodies S and plural devices 1 which facilitate mutual identification corresponding to individual division positions divided in the width direction of the beltlike bodies S project identification light beams L upon the surfaces of the beltlike bodies S which come close to a surface defect inspection range A by an inspector. The inspector inputs which division position of the beltlike bodies S a visually detected surface defect is at and its degree on the console panel of a defect input device 5. Then a length measuring instrument 3 measures the passing length of the beltlike bodies S and outputs length measurement signals to a computer 4. The computer 4 specifies and stores the position of the defect on the surfaces of the beltlike bodies S and the degrees by using the length measurement signals and defect position signals and defect level signals from the defect input device 5.
