For domestic use in the prepartion of carbonated beverages there is provided a cartridge (C), adapted to be inserted into a container filled with the beverage to be carbonated, and the container is closed. The cartridge has a seal, such as a unidirectional valve body (20), which is at least partly made of a maceratable material in a compact state, such as gelatine, starch, sugar, felt, paper, and the like substances which dissolve, disintegrate, or otherwise react with liquid to become soft when soaked. The cartridge is inserted into the container so that the seal becomes wetted, and after a while the material softens, ceases to function as a sealing element, and allows the release of the gas from the cartridge to admix with the beverage within the container.
