COMBUSTION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR A COAL-FIREDFURNACE UTILIZING A LOUVERED LOW LOAD SEPARATOR-NOZZLEASSEMBLY AND A SEPARATE HIGH LOAD NOZZLEABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA combustion system and method for a coal-fired furnace inwhich a splitter is provided in the main conduit leading from themill for receiving the stream of coal and air and splitting it intotwo separate streams. One stream from the splitter is connected toa separtor-nozzle assembly which divides the stream into a firstmixture containing substantially coal and a second mixture con-taining substantially air. Another nozzle is connected to thesplitter for receiving the other stream of coal and air. At startup and low loads, the separator-nozzle assembly discharges amajority of the coal and air in the two mixtures in a combustionsupporting relationship and the other nozzle discharges a relati-vely low quantity of coal and air in a combustion supporting rela-tionship with the two mixtures. At high load conditions, the othernozzle discharges a majority of the coal and air while the coal andair discharging from the separator-nozzle assembly is kept at rela-tively low values.
