Various methods are known for examining human or animal tissues or human or animal body fluid, one of which methods is based on an optical principle in which different light absorption properties of two different colours are utilised. The known method is however sensitive to fluctuations in the intensity of the two light sources. A device which operates according to this principle is extremely complex and expensive. The invention remedies this in that the tissue or the body fluid is irradiated with light of a continuous spectrum, in that in addition at least two spectrum areas which overlap one another are selected from the light which is allowed to pass and are measured, in that a measurement value of one central area is divided by that of the other, and in that a light intensity-independent colour value is determined from the quotient and this colour value is assigned to an examination result.
