The present invention of a "device for the light-optical display of notices, symbols, special signs, identifying markings and the like, in particular for special-purpose vehicles used by the police, fire brigades, doctors on emergency call, driving schools and the like" relates to illuminated displays which are mounted on top of the vehicle transversely with respect to its direction of travel. In this case, the device has a board which, for the purpose of illumination, carries electrical lamps and sockets for said lamps, a hood-shaped part serving the purpose of covering and this part carrying diffusing screens with the notice to be displaced. According to the invention, the display can be cleared by simply switching off the electrical lamps, the diffusing screens of the hood-shaped part on the front side and on the rear side being constructed as an opaque, but translucent projection surface of a back-projection screen (rear-projection screen), and the notice to be displayed being attached directly to the inside of the projection surface or at a small distance therefrom. Since the projection surfaces are opaque, as long as they are not illuminated from inside, the illuminated display can continue to remain mounted on the motor car, if after the particular use (e.g. end of the driving lesson) the previously shown display is no longer permitted to be visible.
