PURPOSE:To effectively remove algae, malodorous materials and nitrogen in raw water by partitioning a biofilter tank and biocontact tank with a middle partition chamber to two chambers, providing a raw water inlet pipe and outlet to the upper and lower parts of the biofilter tank and providing an inlet gate and treated water outlet pipe to the upper and lower parts of the biocontact tank, then treating the raw water in a downward counter current type in the respective tanks. CONSTITUTION:The raw water for city water is admitted from the inlet pipe 6 in the upper part of the biofilter tank 1 of a 1st stage in which plastic filter media are packed. The algae and odorous materials are removed from the raw water in this tank 1. The raw water is then fed from the outlet 7 in the lower part of the biofilter tank 1 to the biocontact tank 2 of the 2nd stage where the raw water for city water admitted from the inlet gate 10 in the upper part of the contact tank 2 is brought into contact with plastic or concrete corrugated plates 5 to accelerate biocontact oxidation and to remove the ammonia nitrogen in the raw water. The treated water subjected to the biotreatment in such a manner is released from the outlet pipe 13 in the lower part of the biocontact tank 2.
