PURPOSE:To selectively generate stylene from phenylacetylene by allowing a component containing Ni and more than one type of metal elements selected from among Sn, Pb, Cd, Bi, Sb and Zn to be supported on a carrier. CONSTITUTION:A metallic salt consisting of about 2-70pts. of a component containing about 100pts. of Ni and more than one type of metal elements selected from among Sn, Pb, Cd, Bi, Sb and Zn is dissolved in a solvent such as water or acetone. Then this dissolved metallic salt is allowed to be supported on a carrier of metal oxide, namely metal alkoxyd such as ethylsilicate, or silica using an immersion method. After this the metallic salt is allowed to undergo treatments such as drying and heating to prepare the subject catalyst. With the application of this catalyst, the hydrogenation of stylenes into ethylbenzene almost does not occur in the hydrogenizing reaction of phenylacetylenes, thus enabling stylenes to be obtained at high selective rate.
