Cuminal and cuminal di:methyl acetal prepn.

The process consists of dissolving p-cymene of formula (I) in methanol contg. metallic sodium in a cooled cell without internal divisions. A graphite anode and stainless steel cathode are used, with a constant current intensity. Cuminal dimethyl acetal of formula (III) is obtd. in 40% yield approx. Hydrolysis with dil. HCl gives cuminal of formula (II) in quatitative yield.
