A method of controlling backstep in an electric discharge machining apparatus comprising the steps of moving an electrode (EP) relative to a workpiece (WK) to discharge machine the workpiece, then moving the electrode in a direction that releases the contact with the work-piece when a shortcircuit signal showing the contact between the electrode (EP) and the workpiece (WK) is generated, further determining in advance a stationary point (A) to which the electrode (EP) is moved back and moving the electrode (EP) back toward the stationary point (A) upon the generation of the shortcircuit signal.
