The method of assembling mechanisms etc. in a workshop uses a system of manual work stations using benches constructed so that they can be assembled in a flexible manner. These are combined with a conveyor used to advance pallets between the stations so that components can be added to the mechanisms. The pallet is advanced by the belt along one edge, and is rectangular, designed so that it can be advanced by either long edge. The belt has strands at right-angles to each other and is driven by an electric motor. A pallet can be driven frictionally, and can carry a mechanical coding. It can carry a strip with a higher coefficient of friction than the remainder of its body. It can incorporate projections which are used to change its direction.
