Strong, stable solutions of balsam of Peru - using over 90 per cent by vol ethanol as solvent

Solutions of balsam of Peru, in ethanol of over 90% by volume, are new. The ethanol used is preferably 95%, the balsam content being 1-10%. Other components that may be present in these solutions include benzalkonium and benzethonium salts, which improve the antiseptic and viricidal properties of the balsam. The compositions may be formulated for inhalation or topical application to the skin and mucous membranes. USE/ADVANTAGE - Balsam of Peru is known to be useful in dermatology, traumatology, and in the treatment of respiratory mucosa. Solutions in 80% ethanol are known, but are not stable when the balsam content exceeds 1%. By using ethanol with a lower water content, stronger, stable solutions of the balsam, 5% or more, may be obtained.
