PURPOSE:To obtain a bio-compatible material having the good compatibility with a skin region and easily incorporated in an artificial coating film, cartilage and cosmetics by forming said material from a mixture of modified collagen and water-soluble polysaccharides and forming a coacervate structure. CONSTITUTION:In preparing a bio-compatible material, enzyme treated collagen is swollen by water to prepare an aqueous solution which is, in turn, heat-treated for a predetermined time at predetermined temp. A dilute aqueous solution of water-soluble polysaccharide, for example, chondroitin sulfate C is added to and mixed with said aqueous solution at predetermined temp. equal to or more than the modifying temp. of collagen and, after standing to cool, an acidic solution is added to the resulting mixture to control the pH thereof. When said solution mixture is adjusted to weak acidity of pH3.0-5.0, coacervate is formed. The bio-compatible material having the coacervate structure is subjected to at least one or more kind of treatment selected from formalin treatment, hot dehydration treatment and repeating freezing/thawing treatment if necessary to make it possible to reinforce and cure the coacervate film. The coacervate structure itself can be used as a medical material but said structure is applied to a proper carrier to be capable of being formed into a medical material for an artificial blood vessel, an artificial organ or the like.
