NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula (R is 1-10C alkyl; X and Y are F or Cl). EXAMPLE:4-(trans-4'-Ethyldichlorohexyl)benzoic acid 2-fluoro-4-chloro-phenyl ester. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. Especially suitable for adjusting the DELTAepsilon value. It has DELTAepsilon of as low as -0.1 and low viscosity, and decreases the electrical characteristics such as threshold voltage and saturation voltage of a liquid crystal composition. It can be applied also as a high-temperature liquid crystal composition and a novel double-frequency display system. PROCESS:The compound of formulaIcan be prepared by reacting 4-(trans-4'- alkylcyclohexyl)benzoic acid with thionyl chloride, and reacting the resultant compound with 2,4-dihalogenophenol in the presence of pyridine.
