Meningococcus class 1 outer-membrane protein vaccine - useful to immunise against meningococcal disease

Vaccine against meningococcal disease comprises an outer-membrane vesicle isolated from expressing a homologons and/or heterologons gene encoding at least one meningococcal class I outer-membrane protein (I) or a fragment of oligopeptide contg. an epitope. (I) pref. originates from a mutant meningococcal strain which is negative for Class 2/3 outer membrane protein. Also new is the purified fragment of class 1 outer membrane protein of Neisseria meningitidis, the fragment having a mol. wt. of up to 25 kD and cong. continuous or discontinuous epitopes reactive with bactericidal antibodies against N meningitidis. Also claimed are: isolated nucleic acid encoding (I), an antigenic conjugate of (I) and a carrier protein and a fusion protein comprising a flagellin protein with an aminoacid sequence for an epitope of (I) inserted within it.
