Hydrocarbon feeds are hydro-desulphurised and/or hydro-denitrogenised by contact with H2 at raised temp. in presence of a catalyst comprising a carrier and (a) a P component and (b) a hydrogenation component comprising a Gp. VIII metal. Components (a) and (b) are applied by impregnating the extruded or compacted carrier with effective amts. of precursors of (a) and (b) either (i) simultaneously or (ii) in sequence, and treating the material with a gas contg. H2 at raised temp., (i) after the impregnation or (ii) (1) during and/or after the last impregnation step when using a gaseous precursor for (a), or (2) after the last impregnation step when using a non-gaseous precursor.
